Arsenal’s starting XI against Milan and match preview

Morning, eternal optimists!

So, do we go for it? Should we throw the slightest sign of caution to the wind, field our strongest available attacking line-up and have a real go at Milan?

Logically, we’re out and tonight’s result is nothing more than a foregone conclusion. AC Milan are defensively solid, seasoned European campaigners with a 4-0 lead to defend. As far as mountains-that-have-to-be-climbed go, it’s a whopper.

Then there’s the romanticism, the part of me that believes nothing is impossible and the ‘Roy of the Rovers’ script is waiting to be played out in it’s full, glorious entirety. It’s happened to Milan before. Circa 2003/2004 (I think it was) they took a 4-1 first-leg victory to Spain to play Deportivo. They lost 4-0.

The biggest dilemma for Le Boss is his selection. Many have thought he’d rest key personnel, but it appears he is willing to throw the kitchen sink at our Italian visitors:

??I just do not want him to play with too much pressure,? Wenger said. ??I just want him to enjoy the game and I feel as long as the theory of scoring is not interrupted, the confidence of the player is high and he scores naturally.

??Once you do not score in two or three games you become a little bit more edgy. So the best thing is for him to score goals.?

??You never know in the game. We have nothing to lose, but you know as well that for us to find the right balance between having to go completely forward and not to concede a goal is the difficulty for us.

??Maybe I will change individuals in the team and go for it and see if we can put them under pressure and try to score goals.?

The area we could be lacking slightly is the midfield. Mikel Arteta will miss out as he’s still suffering with concussion, Diaby is out again with a hamstring problem (WHAT? NO WAY!) – as is Yossi Benayoun. Kieran Gibbs and Tomas Rosicky remain doubts to start the game but should pass late tests. Wenger faces a tough selection and I think he might opt for partnering van Persie with Walcott and a change of our formation. I would take an educated (Ha!) stab at;

Szczsney;, Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Gibbs; Song, Rosicky, Gervinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Walcott, van Persie

Equipped with the simple instruction to go for broke, and the roar of The Emirates behind them, I believe we can make things interesting on the night. There’s a minuscule chance of the spectacular occurring, and the pressure is off the players in that respect.

Who knows, folks? Maybe, just maybe this time tomorrow we’ll still be in the Champions League and I’ll be posting about one the greatest nights in the club’s history.

We can dream.

    Good line-up, but i think care must be taken with the back 4 (Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny & Gibbs) while the midfield & attack move for full attack. But better 2 face the fact that we are out of Champions League.

    Why should we deceive ourselves by thinking we will get anything out of the game, AC Milan were better than us in the first leg, and that hasn’t changed. Let us concentrate on the league that is where our hope lies.

      Why not believe we can do something and get behind the team instead or your negative comments, at 2-0 against spurs bet you were writing us off and look what happened there, on there day arsenal can tear any team in the world apart
